The Blue Comet (Kodachrome)

The Blue Comet (Kodachrome)
The Whippany Railway Museum has fully and meticulously restored one of the Central Railroad of New Jersey’s "Commuter Club Cars", to the way it looked the day it was received by the railroad. Commuter Club Cars were provided to a group of commuters at the cost of conversion and operation, and guaranteed each of its members one of the 74 seats onboard the car. The car was fitted with an electric generator, one flush toilet and one wash basin. Air-conditioning was provided by forced-air blowing over several 400-pound blocks of solid ice carried in the bunkers underneath the car. Beverages were served by a porter, and for many commuters it was a civilized way to travel to and from work. Club Cars were placed at the east end of the train so their passengers did not have far to walk through the Jersey City Terminal. These special cars were scheduled to operate only on specific commuter trains. The inside of this car with it’s mahogany finish is a work of art, and I have some pictures coming up later of the inside.

The exterior of this old Commuter Club Car, the "Jersey Coast", has been painted to resemble livery that would have been on the Blue Comet. This car however never saw service on the Blue Comet. The BLUE COMET was the crack passenger train of the Jersey Central railroad during the 1930′s, running between Jersey City and Atlantic City until 1941. The paint scheme of the train, with its cream-color band running the length of each car, reminded one of a comet streaking through space.

Tika Bus at the Guatemala City Terminal

Tika Bus at the Guatemala City Terminal
A handful of companies offer first class bus service connecting Guatemala City with other countries in Central America. I chose Tika Bus when I scheduled a trip from Guatemala City which took me to San Salvador, El Salvador, across Honduras, and ultimately to Managua, Nicaragua and return. Tika Bus serves the capital city of every Central American country except Belize, running from Talapan, in southern Mexico, to Panama City. The buses are modern, clean, air conditioned, and are operated efficiently. I consider their service superior to that of Greyhound in the United States.

Each bus has an onboard restroom which you will probably need because stops are infrequent. Also, the busses show movies en route. Perhaps those who ride the busses frequently appreciate the movies but I considered them a negative because I would have preferred to view the countryside and visit with other passengers instead of sitting with shades drawn watching a movie. Of the six movies shown on my entire trip, all but one was very violent and loud. Most were in Spanish with English subtitles, or vice versa.

The cost of my round trip, traveling a total of 28 hours through four Central American countries was only $90 US. The buses do not run at night but make stops where very reasonably priced hotels are available.

The Guatemala City Tika Bus terminal is located at Boulevard Los Proceres 26-55, Zone 10, local`s 1-2. Fun Plaza.
